🔍 Conan Doyle and the Detective He Tried to Kill

Arthur Conan Doyle never intended to become the father of detective fiction, and for much of his life he rather resented it. Born in Edinburgh in 1859, he trained as a doctor at the university there, and it was in the lecture halls that he met the man who would change literature forever. Dr Joseph Bell was a surgeon with an almost supernatural gift for observation. He could glance at a stranger and deduce his trade, his recent travels, and his ailments from nothing more than his hands, his boots, and the way he carried himself. Doyle watched, spellbound, as Bell identified a patient as a recently discharged non-commissioned officer who had served in Barbados, reading it all from his manner and a skin complaint. Years later, struggling to fill the empty hours of a failing medical practice in Portsmouth, Doyle began to write, and he poured Bell's methods into a fictional detective. He later told his old teacher plainly, "It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes."

Holmes first appeared in 1887 in A Study in Scarlet, and by the 1890s, through the pages of The Strand Magazine, he had become a phenomenon unlike anything publishing had seen. Readers queued at newsstands for each new installment, and the character's cold logic, his violin, his Baker Street rooms, and his loyal Dr Watson became fixed in the public imagination. Yet the more beloved Holmes grew, the more his creator came to despise him. Doyle thought the stories cheap and commercial, a distraction from the serious historical novels on which he believed his true reputation would rest. He complained that Holmes kept him from better things. In 1893 he decided to be rid of the detective for good. He sent him to grapple with his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty and plunge over the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, in a story fittingly titled "The Final Problem." The diary entry Doyle wrote that day was blunt. It read simply, "Killed Holmes."

What followed was one of the most extraordinary displays of public grief ever aimed at a fictional character. The Strand reportedly lost 20,000 subscribers with outraged readers flooding the magazine and Doyle himself with furious letters. For nearly a decade Doyle held firm. But the pressure and the money proved irresistible, especially when an American publisher offered a sum worth well over a million pounds today for a batch of new stories. In 1903, in "The Empty House," Holmes was resurrected, the great fall revealed as a ruse he had faked to slip away and dismantle Moriarty's gang in secret. The detective went on appearing until 1927.

📱 How Nokia Lost the World

In 1865 a Finnish engineer named Fredrik Idestam opened a paper mill on the banks of the Nokianvirta River, and it was from that river that the company eventually took its name. For its first century Nokia was a sprawling, unglamorous conglomerate that made almost everything except phones. It manufactured rubber boots that became famous across Northern Europe, along with car tires, cables, electricity, and even television sets, wandering from one industry to another with no particular specialism. This willingness to reinvent itself was baked into the company's DNA. It would prove to be both its greatest strength and, much later, the very quality it fatally lost. Only in the 1980s did Nokia begin edging seriously into mobile communications, sensing that portable telephones were the future.

The bet paid off beyond anyone's wildest hopes. Through the 1990s Nokia rode the mobile revolution to the very top of the world, launching its first mass GSM phone in 1992 and overtaking Motorola to become the planet's largest handset maker by 1998. Its phones were legendary for being tough, simple, and almost indestructible. Models like the Nokia 3310 and the 1100 sold in staggering numbers, the latter becoming one of the best-selling electronic devices in history. At its peak the company single-handedly transformed the Finnish economy and controlled close to half of the entire global smartphone market by 2007.

Then, in June 2007, Apple released the iPhone, and the ground shifted beneath Nokia's feet almost overnight. The iPhone reimagined the phone as a sleek, touch-controlled computer running an endless supply of apps. Nokia's leadership, wedded to physical keyboards and its aging Symbian operating system, could not bring itself to respond decisively. The company's engineers had actually built touchscreen prototypes years earlier, but internal politics, complacency, and a deep faith in the Nokia name smothered the urgency to change. A desperate 2011 partnership with Microsoft to adopt Windows Phone only accelerated the fall, since the platform never attracted the apps or developers that users craved. In 2013 Nokia sold its mobile phone division to Microsoft for around €5.4 billion, and Microsoft wrote off almost the entire purchase soon after. The company that had spent a century brilliantly reinventing itself, from paper to boots to phones, was undone by a single refusal to reinvent itself one more time.

Note: In 2026, Nokia is once again benefiting from a major technological shift. Growing demand for AI data centres and high-speed network infrastructure has helped drive strong growth in its AI & Cloud business, showing that the company’s ability to reinvent itself may be returning.

🕳 Why Nothing Can Escape a Black Hole

To understand why a black hole is a trap that even light cannot spring, you first have to understand a simpler idea called escape velocity. Every object in space pulls on you with its gravity, and to break free you must move faster than a certain speed. On Earth that speed is about 11 kilometers per second, which is why rockets must be flung upward with such tremendous force. On the far more massive Sun, the escape velocity climbs to around 620 kilometers per second. A black hole is what you get when you crush an enormous amount of mass into an unimaginably tiny space. Its gravity becomes so ferocious that, at a certain distance from its center, the escape velocity finally reaches the ultimate cosmic speed limit, the speed of light itself, roughly 300,000 kilometers per second. That precise distance is called the event horizon, the point of no return.

Here lies the reason nothing gets out, and it rests on the single most fundamental rule in physics. According to Einstein, nothing in the universe, not a spaceship, not a particle, not even light, can travel faster than the speed of light. Escaping from within the event horizon would require exactly that, and since it is flatly impossible, everything that crosses the boundary is trapped forever. Even a beam of light fired straight outward simply curves back inward and falls toward the center. It helps to picture the event horizon not as a solid wall but as a waterfall of space itself, with the fabric of spacetime pouring inward faster than light can swim against it. You could drift across that boundary without feeling a thing, noticing no wall and no jolt. And yet from that instant, every possible path you could take, in every direction, leads only deeper inward. The way out has quite literally ceased to exist.

At the very heart of the black hole waits the singularity, a point where all the captured mass is crushed to infinite density and where our current laws of physics break down entirely. Anything falling toward it is eventually stretched into a long, thin thread by the punishing gravity, a fate that scientists have gleefully named "spaghettification." Yet the story is not quite one of perfect, eternal imprisonment, thanks to a startling insight from Stephen Hawking in 1974. He showed that empty space constantly froths with pairs of particles that pop into existence and vanish. Right at the edge of a black hole, one particle of a pair can fall in while its partner escapes. This faint leakage, now called Hawking radiation, means that a black hole very slowly bleeds away its mass and could, over almost incomprehensible spans of time, evaporate completely. The timescales are absurd. A black hole the mass of our Sun would take around 10 to the power of 67 years to disappear, vastly longer than the current age of the universe. So the great cosmic prison is not entirely escape-proof after all. It merely holds its captives for a length of time so immense that, for every practical purpose, forever is the right word.
